The papers represent the scope of Brainin’s life endeavours as writer, editor, biographer, critic, translator, lecturer, Zionist and one of the founders of the Jewish Public Library. The Fonds is divided into five major series: Literary and editorial activities, Biography and criticism, Correspondence, Special Collections, and the records of the Jewish Public Library Archives Committee.
Brainin, Reuben, 1862-1939The fonds contains records relating to the Pioneer Women's Organisation in Montreal, most of which were produced in the 1950s through 1980s. A number of meeting minutes, newsletters and bulletins, and a copy of the Pioneer Women's Magazine attest to their internal activities, while several awards, certificates, and plaques celebrate the organization's accomplishments. Speeches and addresses for various luncheons and other fundraising events can also be found in the fonds, along with internal and external correspondence.
Pioneer Women's OrganisationFonds consists of administrative and financial records of the North End Wilkomirer Hebrew Sick Benefit Association as well as records of its participation and interaction with various other Montreal Jewish community organizations.
North End Wilkomirer Hebrew Sick Benefit AssociationThe fonds contains records which attest to Motel Sivak and Chienke Sivak's upbringings in the shtetels of Monastyryshche and Pilvishok (respectively), including photographs, articles, and booklets. A number of records, including photographs, newspaper articles, and correspondence document Chienke and Motel's involvement in the Zionist movement in Montreal, particularly with the Farband Labour Zionist Organization and the Zhitlovsky Branch of the Labour Zionist Farband Movement. Memoirs and transcribed stories pertaining to several of Chienke and Motel's family members can also be found in the fonds, as well as handwritten copies of Chienke's favourite poems and poems of Chienke's own creation. The records culminate in English and Yiddish manuscripts of Motel and Chienke's memoir entitled "Chiekne's Motl and Motl's Chienke: A Twentieth Century Story," as well as a bound copy and Yiddish and English audio recordings of the memoir on cassette.
Sivak, Motel, 1909-2002The fonds contains newspaper clippings, articles, and other records related to Dickstein's Zionist work and his published writings later in his career. The fonds also contains extensive records and correspondence surrounding Dickstein's 65th birthday celebration, attesting to the major community presence he had, as well as messages of condolence to Dickstein's family after his death, demonstrating his impact on the Montreal Jewish community and worldwide Zionist movement.
