Administrative history

Pioneer Women's Organisation (more recently renamed Na'amat, an acronym for "Movement of Working Women and Volunteers") was founded in 1925 in America and Montreal, and is a women-run organization of the Labour Zionist movement offering women "professional volunteerism" outside the home. The organization was initially comprised almost entirely of new immigrants to Montreal, and centred around fundraising projects through their affiliation with a number of schools, clinics, and community centres, as well as addressing concerns related to immigration, activism, women's issues, and politics. Pioneer Women was affiliated with their American counterpart until they broke off to form an independent group in the 1960s. They continue to support a number of Youth Zionist movements.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds contains records relating to the Pioneer Women's Organisation in Montreal, most of which were produced in the 1950s through 1980s. A number of meeting minutes, newsletters and bulletins, and a copy of the Pioneer Women's Magazine attest to their internal activities, while several awards, certificates, and plaques celebrate the organization's accomplishments. Speeches and addresses for various luncheons and other fundraising events can also be found in the fonds, along with internal and external correspondence.
