Sonia Sarah Lipsyc is a French Jewish author, sociologist, researcher, journalist, teacher and dramaturgist.
Sonia Sarah Lipsyc was born in Casablanca in 1955, in the French protectorate of Morocco, from an Ashkenazi father and a Sephardic mother. After Morocco’s independence, her family moved to Strasbourg, the city where she grew up. She studied psychology, and then theater, before obtaining a PhD in sociology from Strasbourg University in 1997. She was also trained in Jewish studies, both by studying on her own and by being a part of study circles, in France and in Israel. She had a university career in France, Belgium, Israel, and later on in Quebec, and became a member of the CNRS in France in 2006. She also had a career in theater, practicing as an author and director since 1971, and leading the Kédem company in Strasbourg during the period 1985-1993. She arrived in Montreal in 2009, to create ALEPH-Centre d’études juives contemporaines at the invitation of the CSUQ. She led the Centre from its founding until 2022, and then became its referent. She also led edited La Voix Sépharade, the CSUQ periodical. she published a book, "Salomon Mikhoels, le testament d’un acteur juif", as well as numerous scholarly articles, and edited the collaborative publication "Quand les femmes lisent la Bible". She has also written numerous press articles, and participated in radio and TV programs.
