Biographical history
Joseph Schubert (1889-1952), municipal politician, civil rights activist and labour leader, was born in Rumania and immigrated to Canada in 1903. He served as a city councilor for the Saint-Louis ward in Montreal for 17 years, beginning in 1924, during which time he was the only City Councillor from the Labour Party. Schubert was active in the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada for many years, serving as Vice President from 1924-1925. He was secretary-treasurer of the Joint Board of International Ladies Garment Workers Union from 1916-1926. He was also a member of the Montreal Metropolitan Commission, director of the Jewish General Hospital, and member of B’nai Brith, Workmen’s Circle, King Edward’s Association, and other community organizations. He was married to Esther Herschorn Schubert, with whom he had two children.

William V. Victor (?-1998) was the son-in-law of Joseph Schubert, by marriage to his daughter Laura. He was a chartered accountant who served, like his father-in-law, as a Montreal City Councillor (Category A, District no. 5) for several terms between 1940 and 1960. He also served as president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec and as a Heritage Governor for the United Talmud Torahs of Montreal.

Fonds contains paper records related mostly to the political careers of Joseph Schubert and William V. Victor, including business correspondence, invitations, newspaper clippings, elections information, and handwritten notes. Also included are documents related to both men's involvements with community and professional organizations, and one file belonging to Laura Victor (nee Schubert).The fonds may have been assembled by Laura Victor.
