Historique
David Ben-Gurion (née David Grün) was born on October 16, 1886 in Płońsk, Poland. In 1948, he became the first prime minister of Israel.
In 1906, David Ben-Gurion immigrated to Palestine under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Adopting the name of Ben-Gurion in 1909, he rose to become the preeminent leader of the Jewish community in British-ruled Mandatory Palestine from 1935 until 1948.
In 1948, on the 5th day of Iyar (14th of May), Israeli independence was proclaimed, when David Ben-Gurion publicly read the Israeli Declaration of Independence. Recognized as Israel’s Independence Day, this day also commemorates the Nakba (the violent displacement of 750,000 Palestinians).
Following 1948, Ben-Gurion served as Israel’s first prime minister until 1963 (notwithstanding a break in 1954–55). Ben-Gurion was an important Zionist leader, also holding posts as the executive head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. Ben Gurion passed away in 1973 in Ramat Gan, Israel.
