Biographical history
Oscar Faerman was born in Romania in 1895. He moved to Montreal in 1914 and in 1924 he married Rachel “Rae” Faerman at the B’nai Jacob. Oscar and Rae had two children together: Pola Janet Spiegel and Donald Faerman, they lived in a house built by Oscar in Westmount, Montreal. Oscar also had four siblings: Stella Charness, Ben Faerman, Ruby Faerman, and Jack Faerman, their parents were M. Faerman and Dolie Greenberg.
In 1920 Faerman opened a women’s clothing company with Morris Gross (Jeffery Miller’s grandfather) called Comfort Kimona. Comfort Kimona was successful and allowed Faerman to begin his philanthropic work at various Jewish organizations in Montreal. Faerman provided the Jewish Public Library with a donation of 50,000 dollars in 1955, after which he was honored with a collection of fiction named after him. Faerman was also involved in several funding campaigns for B’nai Brith and the YMH/WA.
Faerman passed away on June 16, 1977, in Montreal.
Custodial history
Bust of Oscar Faerman was donated to the JPL Archives by Daniel Spiegel in 2017.
Scope and content
Collection consists of a bust of Oscar Faerman, textual records and photographs of Faerman and his family. The collection reflects Faerman's philanthropic commitment to the Jewish community of Montreal through correspondence and awards gifted by YMH/WA, Hillel McGill and Jewish Public Library.
