Fonds 1089 - Mordecai Husid Fonds

Mordecai Husid was a literary critic, poet, pedagogue, and author. He taught at the Jewish People's Schools in Montreal. Husid was the editor of Keneder Adler. He wrote numerous short stories and poems mainly in Yiddish and Hebrew.

Born in Bessarabia on February 28, 1909, Mordecai Husid studied pedagogy and psychology in Vienna. During World War II, he taught in a Jewish school in Finland. He then went to Stockholm, Sweden, where he was in charge of the Jewish community's cultural work amongst refugees. In 1948, Husid was sent by the Jews of Sweden and Denmark as a delegate to the World Jewish Congress for Jewish culture.

In 1950 Husid moved to Montreal where he worked as a teacher at the Folk-shule (Jewish People's School) and the Jewish teacher's seminary. Husid was also an editor for the Yiddish daily newspaper, Der Keneder Adler. Husid's writing was in both Hebrew and Yiddish. He contributed poems, stories and essays to various Jewish journals in Montreal and abroad. Husid published five books of poetry and a book of short stories.
