        History

Morris Mendelson was born in Romania in 1884. He immigrated to Montreal where he opened his first pawn shop and secondhand goods store in 1906. When Morris died in 1964, his three sons, Harry, Hymie, and Louis, took over management of the business. At their peak, the Mendelsons owned and operated five pawn shops within one block on Rue St. Antoine (previously Craig street). The Mendelson business began to suffer in the 1970s as credit cards drew customers away from pawnbrokers as lending institutions. The Mendelson pawn shops remained a fixture on Rue St. Antoine until the final storefront closed in 1991.
