Born in Knyshin, Bialystock, Poland where he also began his teaching career at a Hebrew school. Magid immigrated to Canada in 1921 and joined the faculty of United Talmud Torah. From 1924-1926 he was the principal of the Regina Hebrew School in Saskatchewan. He returned to Montreal and was appointed Head Teacher in 1932. In 1935 he was named principal and shortly after appointed the first full-time Educational Director of the schools.
