History
Lyon Cohen was born Yehuda Leib Cohen in Suwalki, Russian Empire (present-day Poland), in 1868. He was a Jewish Canadian philanthropist, businessman and community leader.
He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1871. In 1891, he cofounded the Canadian Jewish Times, the first English-language Jewish newspaper in Canada, which latter became the Canadian Jewish Chronicle. He was the first president of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1919. The singer Leonard Cohen was his grandson.
