Biographical history
Louis Muhlstock (April 23, 1904-2001) was a Canadian Jewish Painter born in Narajow, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (today Narayiv, in Ukraine).
At age 7, he arrived in Montreal with his parents. By 1918, he worked as a bookkeeper, and took night lessons of art at the Monument National, then at the Art Association of Montreal and École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited for the first time in 1925 at the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1928-1931, he lived in Paris, studying under the painter Louis Biloul. Coming back to Montreal, he started painting scenes of the Great Depression then gripping the city, having sometimes himself to paint on kraft papers and sugar bags. During his life, he became a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists, Canadian Group of Painters, Contemporary Arts Society, Federation of Canadian Artists and Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour.
Muhlstock held an honorary doctorate from Concordia University (1978) and was an Officer of the Order of Canada (1991) and Chevalier de l'ordre du Québec (1998). He passed away in 2001.
