Biographical history

Textile importer, born in Bessarabia, son of Esther and Shaia Cohen. Joseph married Dora Robinson, active Haddasah (past Pres), with whom he shared children Louis, Nathan, Dr. David, Ralph and Mrs. Wm (Suzanne) Shuchat. Blessed with fifteen grandchildren. Jospeh Cohen's professional activities included: President, J. Cohen Inc. Affiliations: YMHA, (Gov); United Talmud Torahs (Gov); Jewish General Hospital (Gov); Jewish Hospital of Hope (Gov); Keren Hatarbut; Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University; B'nai Brith; ZOC; and Corinthian Lodge AF and AM. Cohen wrote a number of Hebrew poems which were published. Cohen came to Canada in 1904, and was a descendant of the Chief Rabbi of Odessa. Cohen attended Congregation Shaar Hashomayim. He resided at 250 Kensington Ave., and his business was located at 1085 St. Alexander St, Montreal. Information found in "Who's Who in Canadian Jewry entry", 1963.
