Biographical history
Born November 22, 1904 in Horodkov, Ukraine, Isaiah Rabinovich was a well-known educator in Yiddish and Hebrew, critic, and writer. Rabinovich became a teacher in Ukraine, studying for a time at the University of Kiev. In 1924, Rabinovich immigrated to Canada, first settling in Winnipeg and then Toronto.
From 1935 to 1960 Rabinovich taught at the Farband Folk School. During this time he also studied towards his PhD, earning it in 1960 from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.
Rabinovich was a published scholar, with work appearing in numerous Yiddish and Hebrew periodicals and volumes, in addition to authoring his own works. He was the recipient of awards such as the Louis Lamed Prize (1947) and the J.I. Segal Award. In 1969, Rabinovich was invited to Israel by President Zalman Shazar. He returned to Toronto again in 1970.
Isaiah Rabinovich died in Toronto on July 17, 1972.
