        History

Harvey Golden was born in Russia in 1904 and immigrated to Winnipeg with his family (including his older sister, Esther) as a child. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, Golden won a scholarship to Harvard where he pursued a doctorate in history. In the 1920s, Golden accepted the position of Executive Director at the YM-YWHA, which was a new institution then situated on Mount Royal Avenue; much of his YM-YWHA career was spent integrating first-generation Jewish immigrant youth into Canadian life. After World War II and the relocation of much of the Montreal Jewish community further west in the city, Golden spearheaded the building of the Snowdon YM-YWHA. He remained Executive Director for 40 years. In the 1970s, Golden was appointed to the Protestant School Board Commission of Greater Montreal; he was also a consultant to the Allied Jewish Community Services. Golden was married to Riva Cohen (d. 1989) with whom he had two children, Alan and Howard. He passed away in April 1990 at 86 years old.
