Biographical history
Born in Bukovina, Romania, January 24, 1876, Harry (Hirsch) Hershman came to Montreal in 1902. He was co-founder of the Workmen's Circle, and was dedicated to humane causes. Hershman founded a small library in his home, from where books were lent free of charge. This was a precursor of the Jewish Public Library, eventually founded in 1914.
Hershman was active in building the first Peretz School following World War I, and was also instrumental in bringing over orphans from the pogroms in Ukraine. In his youth Hershman wrote poetry, and was later a pioneer of the Yiddish press. A lover of Yiddish literature, Hershman participated in publishing a number of literary journals in Montreal.
