History
Rachel Bercovitch Gittleson (1873-1952) was born November 21, 1873 to Feigel Goldberg (1851-1920) and Hyman Bercovitch (1853-1940), Polish-born Jews who immigrated to Montreal in 1876. Hyman started by opening a second hand clothing store on St. Antoine O, before opening a custom tailoring business on Notre Dame O. Finally, the family was able to settle in Westmount. Rachel was one of eight children, including Reva, Rebecca, May, Abe, Lyon, Peter, and Jack. Notably, Peter Bercovtich went on to become a prominent member of the Liberal Party at provincial and federal levels, and Abe became the head of gynecology at the Women's Hospital.
