History
Joan Beecher (1931) grew up in the Grosvenor house, attending first Montreal High School and then McGill University, where she drew cartoons and illustrations for the McGill Daily. She began a career in advertising before meeting Hyman Dennick (1923-2012) through their friend Abraham Tarasofsky, in whom she was more interested. They dated for a year, broke up, and spent a year apart, and then they married on October 7, 1956 at the Mount Royal Hotel. Hyman was born to Russian immigrants Rudolph and Leah (Backler) Dennick, who ran a grocery store. Hyman had three siblings: two sisters, and one brother, Meyer. He worked as an accountant, and continued to work part-time even after retirement. They had three children: Linda Dennick (1958), Margo Dennick (1960), and David Dennick (1972), whom they raised in St. Laurent. Joan eventually returned to school to do a Masters of Social Work in 1966, and worked as a Probation Officer for the QUebec Probation Service until 1996.
