History
Abraham Trapunski was a Holocaust survivor and Montreal Jewish Community leader. Born in Vilna, Lithuania, Trapunski left for Paris at the age of 18 where he studied Engineering at the Paris Polytechnic and married wife Eve. He fled Paris during the Second World War to Toulouse and then to Spain, but was eventually caught and detained as an illegal immigrant. He survived two years in camps and prisons until the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society arranged transport to Canada in 1944.
Trapunski and Eve had two daughters, Beatrice and Irene while living in Europe and later gave birth to son Edward. However, daughter Beatrice was lost at the hands of the Nazis on their journey to Canada.
After arriving in Montreal, Trapunski worked as an electrician and estimator, while devoting his time to the Jewish Public Library, YIVO, JIAS, the Canadian Jewish Congress and various other Yiddish organizations.
Trapunski served as vice president of the Jewish Public Library and went on to be elected president. He was also president, secretary and treasurer of the Vilna and Vicinity Association.
